Relebohile Mofokeng has completed his move to Belgium, with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise officially unveiling the South African as their newest signing following his departure from Orlando Pirates.
The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a four-year contract that keeps him at the Belgian Pro League club until mid-2030, with the option of a further year built into the agreement. He will wear the number 38 shirt, the same number that became his trademark during his rise in Soweto.
HOW THE DEAL CAME TOGETHER
Orlando Pirates first confirmed that they had reached an agreement with Union Saint-Gilloise over the transfer, though the move initially remained conditional on Mofokeng passing a medical and settling his personal terms. The Buccaneers also revealed that the two clubs had actually agreed the deal in principle before the FIFA World Cup got underway, but chose to delay any public announcement until the tournament was over so that Mofokeng could concentrate fully on his duties with Bafana Bafana.
Once his World Cup commitments were complete, the attacker travelled to Belgium to finalise the medical and formalities before being presented as a Union Saint-Gilloise player.
A STAR BUILT AT PIRATES
Mofokeng leaves Orlando Pirates as one of the standout young talents to come through the club in recent years. Operating chiefly as a left winger who could also drift into an attacking midfield role, he registered 10 goals and 8 assists across 27 Betway Premiership appearances in his final season.
Across his time at the club he was central to a trophy-laden period, contributing to Betway Premiership, MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup successes. He then carried that form onto the world stage, featuring for South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he started the round-of-32 clash against Canada, coincidentally lining up against Promise David, who now becomes his club teammate in Belgium.
MOFOKENG'S FIRST WORDS
Speaking after completing the switch, Mofokeng expressed his delight at fulfilling a long-held ambition. He described joining a European club as a dream and spoke of his eagerness to get started in the side's upcoming Champions League qualifying campaign. Reflecting on a memorable stretch that included a league title and his maiden World Cup with South Africa, he said he hopes to keep developing at his new club and, alongside his teammates, do everything possible to challenge for silverware.
